[September] The success of the iPod has spawned an industry of add-on products that let you listen to America’s favorite music player without earbuds. But it wasn’t until Klipsch brought out its iFi ($400) that there was a great-sounding speaker rig for the iPod.

Part of what makes the iFi so impressive is that the company went back to basics for its design. You can’t escape that you need real speakers to get full-sounding music, and the iFi’s stand- or wall-mountable satellites and subwoofer with its 8-inch driver and 200-watt amplifier (which also supplies juice to the satellites) are more than up to the task. Klipsch also scored major ergonomic coups with the system’s radio-frequency (RF) remote control and sturdy, table-mounted dock to hold your iPod — it contains a scroll wheel for navigating songs or playlists and for independently adjusting volume for the sub and sats. The iFi also proved to be a kickass computer speaker system when I hooked it up to my Mac, but I’d be just as happy using it as the main music system in my bedroom or den. —Al Griffin
