New Release (Hollywood)
The much-hyped Potter aims a little too hard for edginess this time, adding Goth flavors and layered production (some of it by Dan Auerbach) and winding up like a less interesting version of Florence & the Machine. She sounds best on an old-fashioned pop ballad like “Timekeeper,” but there’s no excusing the title track’s pulling two clichés (“I found a heart of a lion in the belly of the beast”) together in the same line.
