A full-fledged concept album about the life and death of Redford Stephens, a troubled inner-city youth who was close to the band — except that he didn’t really exist. Still, the concept allows for some provocative lyrics, a surprise Sufjan Stevens cameo, and a long instrumental finale — overall, a more adventurous album than you might expect from the Roots at this point.
