The Peppers have been pushing the melody forward and toning down the frat-boy jokes for years now, but this is the furthest they’ve gone in that direction — especially when you consider that Josh Klinghoffer is the most tasteful guitarist they’ve ever had. Whether you can accept them as poetic souls will of course depend on how big a fan you were in the first place.
