Pop master Benson has lately been part of an all-star crew that’s done live performances of Big Star’s Third; and one can sense that album’s influence on his latest disc, which airs similar themes of isolation and self-doubt. Benson’s more of an optimist than Alex Chilton was though, so his hooks uplift even when the lyrics don’t.
