Go, man, go! Three years before My Fair Lady came this equally adored adaptation of a musical, which was even more equal on the Oscar front, winning 10 of 11 — including, yes, Best Director (shared by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins) and Best Picture. Again, the sound is 7.1 — all the better to hear the great songs by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. A version on two Blu-rays is available, but the Limited Edition boxed set adds a DVD of the movie, a tribute CD of eight songs, and physical extras.
Video: 1080p, 2.20:1. Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1. Extras: old and new featurettes on the dance numbers and the film’s legacy; song-specific commentary by Stephen Sondheim; storyboard-to-film comparison montage; “Music Machine” video jukebox of the film’s songs; in the Limited Edition, a DVD, a tribute CD, a hardcover book, and 10 international-poster postcards.
