Gun-for-hire Martin David (Willem Dafoe) is sent by a military biotech firm to Australia to secretly track and kill the last living Tasmanian Tiger to obtain genetic samples by harvesting its organs. Gradually, though, this ruthless mercenary becomes changed by the wilderness he travels through with a local guide (Sam Neill), and by the young widow (Frances O'Connor) and children he befriends at the farm where he makes his base camp. For lovers of good visuals and sounds, The Hunter won for Best Cinematography and Best Original Music Score at the Australian Film Institute Awards.
