
William Hurt made his big-screen debut in Altered States as an abnormal psych professor researching sensory deprivation tanks and psychedelic drugs. Legendary screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky brought realism to American television in the 1950s and was way ahead of his time in the ’70s with the classic satires Network and The Hospital. But he wound up removing his name from the credits of Altered States — even though it was based on the only novel he ever wrote — after disputes with flamboyant director Ken Russell (The Who’s Tommy).
