When does love disappear? Blue Valentine tries to pinpoint this unexplainable phenomenon by switching between the blooming romance of Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams and the disintegration of their marriage. The performances are as genuine as it gets, showing a couple at two very different stages of a relationship. The story, however, falls into the standard gritty, independent film pattern, offering as many interpretations as you’re willing to give it. The film has a documentary feel, with some beautiful photography, and director Derek Cianfrance perfectly displays the joy of new love and the heartbreak of dead love — but he leaves out too much in the middle, almost forcing the audience to take sides without giving them all the necessary information.
