This 1949 drama by influential director Yasujiro Ozu is a prime example of the Japanese Shomengeki genre, which explores the lives of ordinary working-class people in a realistic way. Included on the disc is Wim Wenders’ (Wings of Desire, The Buena Vista Social Club) full-length 1985 documentary Tokyo-Ga, in which the German director travels to Japan to see if any aspects of Ozu’s Tokyo have survived the years.
