The MechWarrior franchise is as storied as PC gaming gets. But once Microsoft bought the development studio and rights to the name so they could make games set in the universe for the original Xbox, PC gamers were left out in the cold. That changed when Microsoft disbanded the studio and the former head of the original developer negotiated to get the license back. Now, we have MechWarrior Online, a free-to-play tactical simulation, not necessarily a shooter. Day-to-day progression takes place in real time, so March 1 2012 is March 1, 3049. In this multiplayer-only game, players can join up as bands of mercenaries to create their own corporations, or they can ally with existing houses. While you can buy certain items with real money, you don’t have to worry about an independently wealthy opponent gaining an unfair tactical advantage, since weapons and the like are earned through progression. Smart.
