It’s taken some time, but video games are finally growing up. Papo and Yo (Dad and Me), is the story of a young boy in the Brazilian favelas who lives with his best friend, Monster. Their relationship is unique: Monster protects the little boy and helps him navigate through the world, but he’s addicted to eating frogs. When ingests too many, he transforms from a bipedal pink rhinoceros-like creature into an uncontrollable fiery beast. The game mixes equal parts puzzles and platforming in with the allegory of its creator’s childhood, fraught with his father’s substance abuse. It’s cute and colorful, but its themes are dark as night. Where the adventure will lead us is anybody’s guess.
