With many of us locked to our desks gazing at computer screens all day long, it’s no accident that computer-based audio has become the hottest thing in hi-fi. Fortunately, there are plenty of low-priced products out there to help hot-rod desktop listening. HRT’s $139 HeadStreamer is a no-frills DAC/headphone amp that lets you dive inexpensively into the world of high-quality computer audio. It has an asynchronous USB input , a minijack headphone output, and not much else — functions such as volume control are controlled by your computer. (Check out Michael Berk’s review for a more complete snapshot of the HeadStreamer.)
