CES is part cool stuff and a big part flat-out hype; it’s rare to stumble upon a future-tech demo that transfixes you and makes your jaw drop. But Sharp’s 8K demo was one thing that stood out from the rest. An 85-inch, 7,680 x 4,320-pixeldisplay showed video sourced from an 8K “high-vision” camera supplied by Japanese broadcaster NHK. The 1:1 pixel mapping (no scaling) here resulted in a picture with stunning clarity that remained that way even during motion sequences. Why push 8K when most people are happy with their 1080p TVs? The answer to that question was hinted at in Sharp’s nearby 4K-display demo: to create an image with enough dynamic range and detail to provide a “real-viewing equivalent to the natural world.”
The CES is always the birth place of up and coming electronics, where future products get their first taste of public viewing. Many products get their debut at the show, but there are also many that die out because of lack of interest of development that just stopped. I can see the focus on TVs, 3DTVs and the like. Hopefully next year we can see more of those.
