My other favorite room of CES 2012 held the new Status speaker from RBH. This monster is made from two heavy, reinforced cabinets, with the midrange/tweeter cabinet suspended above the subwoofer by a metal bracket that looks like it came off an aircraft carrier. Four 6.5-inch beryllium midranges flank a ScanSpeak Illuminator tweeter that RBH founder Roger Hassing told me costs $500 a pop. Each subwoofer section houses three 10-inch aluminum woofers. The $50,000/pair Status, driven by a Boulder amp and a Boulder media server, delivered the best cymbal reproduction I’ve ever heard, on singer Anne Bisson’s “Hoping Love Will Last.”
