JBL’s new Studio 5 line was designed by Greg Timbers, the same guy who did the company’s way-top-of-the-line, $60K/pair Everest speakers, and to quote a boilerplate phrase used in thousands of reviews, the trickle-down technology is evident. There’s a real pro-style compression driver at the mouth of each of those dramatic-looking molded horns, plus of course various woofers hidden behind the gracefully curving grilles. “Some people love the look, some people hate it,” a company spokesperson confided in me, but I totally dig it and can’t wait to hear them. Prices run from $689/pair for the Studio 530 minispeaker to $2,238/pair for the big Studio 590 towers.
