Automatic equalization can do more to improve a sub’s sound than fancy drivers and zilliwatt amps, but it tends to be found only on expensive models. Velodyne’s EQ-MAX line makes auto EQ affordable. Each sub comes with a microphone. Just hit a button on the remote and the sub uses the mic and its own internally generated test tones to fine-tunes its built-in five-band EQ to compensate for flaws in your room acoustics. Prices run from $479 for the EQ-MAX8 8-incher to $979 for the EQ-MAX15 15-incher.
