The masters of high-quality desktop audio unveiled what promises to be the first wireless audio gear embraced by audiophiles. The Audioengine D2 includes a transmitter that connects through USB or Toslink optical. It transmits 24/96 uncompressed digital audio to a receiver that has stereo RCA and Toslink outputs. There’s a volume knob on the transmitter, but it doesn’t affect the transmitted signal. Instead, it sends a control signal that triggers an electronic volume control inside the receiver. The company claims a signal-to-noise ratio of -118 dB (probably better than anything in your system) and a THD-plus-noise ratio of 0.0015%. You can use up to three receivers with one transmitter. The company also intro’ed the $169 D1 desktop DAC, a USB/Toslink input 24/96 unit with both RCA stereo and headphone outputs.
