We’ve recently seen a lot of speaker companies — mostly notably B&W, Paradigm, and Wharfedale — put a lot of effort into new, compact 5.1 speaker systems. Monitor Audio’s latest entry is definitely the most visually striking. Each of the polygonal satellite speakers incorporates a 4-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter, both of which employ diaphragms made from Monitor’s proprietary C-CAM metal/ceramic composite material. A five-pack of the satellites (for a 5.1 system) runs $699.
The matching subwoofer costs $599, and according to Alan Hook, director of U.S. sales west for Kevro, the distributor, it’s not the dinky hunk’o’junk that often accompanies compact 5.1 systems. “It’s priced below our Bronze BXW10 sub and outperforms it,” he said. Given the sub’s 220-watt amp, 10-inch driver, and 10-inch passive radiator, his claim is certainly plausible.
