
Each ALS1000 incorporates 22 woofers (11 on each side) and 13 folded ribbon tweeters. Each tweeter is actually a 6-foot ribbon folded back and forth. “The woofers are way different than the old ones,” Carver said. “They use a titanium/aluminum diaphragm and an eight-layer, copper-coated aluminum voice coil. The high-frequency response is great. We roll the woofers off first-order above 800 Hz, but shelve it [i.e., cancel the filtering above a certain frequency so the response is reduced but not eliminated] so you get response out to 15 kHz.”
Total weight of each speaker is 135 pounds, necessitating the unusual four-legged platform Carver referred to as the “Klingon base.” A more normal-looking, “lily pad” base is also in the works as an option.
