Given its price, we’re not surprised that like the Optoma HD20, Vivitek’s H1080FD projector is a compact, DLP model that uses TI’s DarkChip 2 and BrilliantColor technologies to produce a relatively bright, detailed image with accurate colors (although to look its best, the Vivitek needed a bit more calibration than the Optoma). The projector isn’t loaded with features, but it does have two HDMI inputs, an RS232 integration port, and a built-in 5-watt mono speaker, as well as a 12-volt trigger for activating motorized screens. Compared to the HD20, we found the H1080FD’s fan to be quieter, but felt its 3X color wheel was a bit more susceptible to rainbows than the HD20, which has a 4X wheel.
