Tomb Raider is interesting for a few reasons: It serves as an origin story for a decades-old franchise and it presents the mature themes many in the game industry have been clamoring for. It’s easy to empathize with Lara Croft because she’s never shot anything before and is as uncomfortable as you might expect when she has to take down a deer for food, let alone put a bullet in an attacker’s brain at point-blank range. These small touches humanize her. My only concern lies in the staccato nature of the gameplay. What I’ve seen breaks up the action at regular intervals for a half-minute at a time, which could break the tension and atmosphere it’s striving to establish.
