This past weekend, the animated film Rango — starring the voices of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, and Bill Nighy — thrust a 3D chameleon onto the laps of audiences nationwide. But forget handing back those plastic glasses — at the rate 3D movies are hitting screens this year, movie theaters should just give those away like airline headphones. In an effort to be a little more discerning than Hollywood, however, we've scanned ahead to pinpoint the 10 movies we think will represent the 3D highlights of 2011 (and one that will most certainly be a new low).
10. Cars 2 (June 24)
Sure, some consider the original Cars is kinda "meh" (which, in the context of Pixar's body of work, makes it a colossal failure), but there's no denying that when it comes to technical thrills and spills you can't beat Disney's Dream Team. The sequel expands the story to take Lightning McQueen and Mater the Tow Truck on a globe-trotting spy mission, where they meet slick, James Bond-like vehicles. Cooler characters (including a suave jet named Finn McMissile, voice by Michael bloody Caine) and more action? Yeah, that'll do.
