International CES -
The Last Word

(continued)

Eye-Poppingest Video Demo: Texas Instruments. Seeing the theatrical trailer for Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones on a DLP projector with cinema-quality resolution was well worth the 10-minute wait. Tasty popcorn, too.

Weirdest Growth Spurt: Memory Stick slots on DVD players. Did anyone really want this? Okay, maybe a few people would like to view digital photos on their TVs, but does it strike anyone else as strange that manufacturers are making DVD players to accommodate some esoteric media before making them all compatible with DVD-Audio?

Product I'd Most Like to Have, if Only It Would Come Out: The combination hard-disk/DVD recorder on display at Toshiba's booth would really give you the best of both video-recording worlds: the flexibility of hard-drive editing and permanent archiving when you want it. Major manufacturers: If you build it, they will buy.

Most Vile CES 2002 Attendee: The soulless jerk who stole my complimentary Toshiba media bag holding my notebook, business cards, and badge holder right out of the press room. Dude, if I EVER catch you, I'll make sure this was your last CES ever. Enjoy those press releases. And watch the windows.
