Director Michael Mann has always been interested in exploring the criminal element (Manhunter, Heat, Miami Vice). Johnny Depp has always sought out characters that are larger than life in eccentric ways (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, the Pirates of the Caribbean series). How fitting, then, that the two paired up to make this biographical thriller, which details how the legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp) became the prime target of J. Edgar Hoover (Crudup) and his top FBI agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale).

Growing up, Depp was intrigued by Dillinger, and for Mann to cast him as the charismatic ladies’ man was, of course, a no-brainer. “Johnny was such a charmer “says Leelee Sobieski, who plays Dillinger’s last girlfriend, Polly Hamilton. “He had all the female extras on set swooning because he would come in and say, ‘Ladies, you’re looking beautiful. Have a great take.’ And of course, all these 60-year-old women would be giggling. It was really sweet.”

Depp knows a thing or two about scoring big at the box office, and if the early reactions to Enemies are any indication, they can expect another summer blockbuster. “I was in Palm Springs recently and went to a movie theater,” notes Sobieski, “and when the preview started, everyone in the audience was like, ‘Woo-hoo!’ It was really exciting.”
