A Rocky-esque drama about real-life fighter Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his crack-addicted former-pug brother Dickey Eklund (Christian Bale). Director David O. Russell keeps The Fighter visually exciting with working-class grit and allowed Bale and family matriarch Melissa Leo to earn their Oscars for supporting actor and actress. Wahlberg makes a convincing boxer, but his one-note range makes the assumed lead character the least interesting. Still, it’s a compelling, inspirational, and worthy boxing movie a few classes below Rocky and Raging Bull.
