A bigscreen LCD that’s also a big deal.

Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving, and the biggest shopping day of the year. It’s a day when hordes of Americans head out to the local mall or Walmart, ready to fill their carts and, if necessary, take you out should you stand in the way between them and a good deal. TV maker Vizio has traditionally released a new model or two just in time for Black Friday — often at prices well below the norm for sets in their category/screen size. The E601i-A3, a 60-inch edge-lit LED LCD, was one such special, having reportedly sold for $699 on that day — a price that is, well, insane. But now that the E601i has bobbed back to a more real-world, though still very affordable, $999, it’s time to check out how it stacks up against the competition.

There’s no use pretending that Google TV wasn’t a dud when the first products shipped back in late 2010. In fact, sales of Logitech’s $300 Revue player were was so bad the company ran screaming from the settop-box market entirely, never to return. But now, like the Backstreet Boys and collateralized mortgages, Google TV is getting another shot, fueled by some much-needed upgrades to the software, including a more streamlined interface, improved search capabilities, and the ability (finally) to access the Android market, now called Google Play.

Like every other Sound+Vision writer, I’ve seen a lot of 3D TV. But I never saw so much 3D TV as I did last night, when I walked into South, Los Angeles’ first 3D sports bar. Everywhere I looked, I could see a Vizio flat-panel TV showing 3D programming—sports mostly, of course, but also games and a couple of Blu-ray Discs.

A couple of weeks ago, I dropped by an active/passive 3D TV shootout held by LG as part of their effort to publicize the benefits of their passive 3D approach over competing active-shutter systems. LG has survey research data showing that some 80 percent of viewers choose their passive 3D system over any of their competitors' active sets, when asked about color, picture quality, brightness, and comfort of glasses. Try having a conversation with someone about 3DTV without hearing how much they hate wearing the required glasses. Go ahead. We'll wait. Whle Vizio hasn't been able to completely solve the eyewear problem, they have made the whole ordeal somewhat cheaper.

CES 2010: Vizio updates XVT series, announces a 21:9 HDTV

Vizio came to CES 2010 with a backpack full of new features for their XVT line, plus an extra-wide display for later in the year.

The CES news bombs have started dropping and Vizio is on the front lines with some ambitious announcements. Their XVT series is getting three new additions in the form of a 47-inch, a 55-inch and a monsterous 72-inch, each running at 480 Hz and boasting 3D and wireless HD compatibility. They have built-in 802.11N WiFi and use Vizio's full-array, local dimming TrueLED backlighting.
