It kind of makes sense. If a rear projection TV works by reflecting an image onto a fixed screen, why can't you put any size screen in front of it?

You remember rear-projection TVs, right? Remember how those really big screens blew away the tiny CRTs, LCD and plasma TVs? Then a funny thing happened. LCD and plasma got big too. But, they also stayed thin. Little by little, RPTV seemed old and boxy in comparison. Even worse, prices of LCD and plasma TVs starting falling — fast.

Panasonic Puts Rear-Projection Sets in Rearview Mirror

In a press briefing touting the virtues of its expanded line of Viera plasma and LCD televisions, Panasonic indicated that it's quietly exiting the rear-projection television business. "We're out of that market," Panasonic spokesman Jeff Samuels told Sound & Vision contributing technical editor Michael Trei.

At the CEDIA Expo, Texas Instruments announced the latest generation of its Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) technology, dubbed DarkChip 4. The company claims even better reproduction of black and dark grays than achieved by its current DarkChip 3 devices (never mind DarkChip 2 and the original, now antediluvian DarkChip).
