Got an App For That?

Reality check - when watching TV, I can pause, skip, rewind, etc. on TiVo by touch on the remote, while still looking at the TV screen. That simply doesn't work when using a smartphone or tablet - you have to look at the device, not the TV screen. So there is no way that apps can ever replace remotes with hard buttons.

On the other hand, traditional remotes clearly suck for anything beyond basic "transport" functions (play, pause, etc.).

For years, remote makers have offered hybrid devices with some hard buttons for "transport" functions and everything else on a touch screen, but those that I have seen don't come close to a smartphone or tablet for media browsing, etc. The high-end ones have also had mid-szed screens, which has made them way too bulky.

The ideal device would probably run Android (so it can run any app), have a ~4" screen, and some hard buttons.

I think the reality is that people will keep the remotes for transport control duties, and supplement them with smartphones or tables for everything else. That isn't as bad as it sounds - the touch screen is useful to navigate initially, but not needed while actually viewing/listening, so it's no big deal to switch to the old-school remote once the programme is playing.
