HTPC Update #4: Buying a Home Theater PC

You are so right! I purchased a Cyberpower HTPC a couple of months ago and I couldn't be happier. This is the second computer that I've bought from Cyberpower and my next one will be from Cyberpower as well. I used to build my own but now it's cheaper to buy one already assembled than to do it yourself. I guess their buying power gets them a bigger price break because I couldn't build it any cheaper than what I payed for a ready built one. Plus you get a warranty! It's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah - prices have definitely gone down for pre-assembled PCs. And it's getting to the point where standard "cookie-cutter" Dells and HPs have more than enough processing/graphics power to do most tasks. I'm a hardcore technophile but I always though building your own PC was overrated. All of my friends who have done it consistently end up with component and hardware failures because of either a) their own shoddy handiwork, or b) don't know how to correctly spec the right components. Great article tho!

I have to respectfully disagree with people here. You can still build a high-end PC for less money than an off the shelf one costs. Plus one gets to pick the components one wants, and not be limited to the options any particular vendor offers.

On the low end, you cannot build a machine for less than pre-assembled one costs. But on the mid to high end, building your own is still cheaper. I recently built a fairly high end (but not an ultimate, maxed-out system), and it cost me just over half what an off-the-shelf comparable system would have cost.

And I have NEVER had any failure of any kind with any machine I have built, contrary to what Tricksy's experience is. I do thorough research ahead of time, and know exactly what will work with the system I am building. In fact, I have seen far more problems with pre-assembled systems than I have with any PC I built myself.

There is another factor that no one addresses - the fun and satisfaction one gets from building systems themselves. I see it as a hobby, much like people build boats, furniture, model airplanes, or whatever, themselves. I enjoy tinkering inside my PCs, and I really enjoy building my own systems to my own specifications.

So, in spite of the naysayers here, the BYOPC world is still alive and flourishing. I myself can't wait until Intel comes out with its next line of processors (probably a couple of years from now, unfortunately), and starting my next BYOPC project!

I got one from dhubcomputers.com. Stock system has 6-core cpu and a GTX 650, as well as tvtuner blu-ray wifi handheld keyboard and even an xbox 360 controller. All for about the same price as this "HTPC"
