Cutting the Cord on Cable — and TV?

I have not had cable since 2005. I lived in the dorms where they provided cable as part of the housing cost. After that, being on a student's budget, paying for cable didn't make sense. You can bet we had internet service though. Even after graduating and getting a real job cable never came back. It is a combination of not being home enough and having to justify the cost.

There are only a few times that I really miss cable. That is a rainy weekend morning, where you can just flip the tv on and find something that you never knew was out there. You can even still do this with services like hulu.

Most of the content I consume through my laptop, but even then I still pipe it through one of our TVs. The content is not always pretty, but you get to see what you want. I won't pay for a cable replacement until the sound and video quality is worth paying for.

In the age of instant gratification, I think people nowadays are more inclined towards demand based TV and not subscriptions for tonnes of channels they do not watch. The best proof of that is how the iTunes store is thriving, and more companies should learn from that experience.
