I park in an indoor parking garage that is very quiet and yet I constantly get surprised with an electric vehicle passes me. I don't know it's coming unless a tire runs over something. My hearing is excellent, so these cars are really quiet. I think the government is on the correct path, but something as simple as a whine should sufficient, causing me to turn and look for the vehicle. All the rest is games. As to the Ford sounds, I prefer the one listed as A.

Silent vehicles = very dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists, animals, etc. A little bit of sound (at least) should be mandatory. Shouldn't have to be obnoxious noise pollution like the sci-fi noises or the awful motorcycle/ferarri noises. My fave would be a gentle-but-unmistakable mechanical clunkity sound of an older vehicle -- something retro, steam-punk, or even the sound of a horse carriage. A Model-T ford? Something like that.

I’m partial to the Jetson’s space car; if I heard that noise while walking I would definitely be aware of any oncoming traffic.
