Haters Gonna Hate

Fanaticism aside, I DESPISE Apple! I do not buy their products, and I recommend others stay away as well. Not because they have bad hardware...the hardware is great. However, their policies have resulted in EVERYONE paying more for content! I used to routinely buy e-books for my Amazon Kindle for $5 to $6. That changed INSTANTLY when Apple started making backroom deals with publishers to compete with Amazon! We all hear how Steve Jobs hated DRM...well, its what propelled the iPod to dominance...if you wanted to use iTunes, you HAD to use an iPod (and vice versa) before Apple "opened up" and offered DRM free music. Note that you STILL have DRM locking your iTunes movies and TV to Apple devices only. Apple's "hatred" of DRM apparently doesnt extend to video, especially when it helps maintain the status quo! (continued....)

Their behavior to the development community has been horrid as well (to say the least!). They have an app approval policy that is about as transparent as concrete! They ban apps for no apparent reason, or they hold the app in "limbo" indefinitely, especially if the app competes with them in ANY way (or may compete with a future offering). They insist on a 30% cut, not only for the apps themselves, but from any content that is sold through their app store. Any links to buy content from other sources are outright banned. They have even gone so far as to ban an app, then incorporate that apps features directly into their operating system! They have brass balls the size of TEXAS to pull this kind of stunt! (continued)

In response, Amazon, Rhapsody and others have eliminated all options to buy content through Apple from their iOS apps (even links to web pages through Safari are verboten!). Many are moving away from apps entirely, and opting for an iPod enhanced HTML5 web interface instead (Amazon's Kindle web app, the Financial Times and others). More and more developers are looking to bypass the app stores entirely due to the policies at Apple.

More and more, common, everyday people are REJECTING Apple and their products, you can see this in the sales numbers of Android vs. iOS for smartphones. Feeling threatened, Apple has decided in their infinite wisdom, to try and sue competitors for "slavishly copying" their designs...as if Apple is the only company on God's Green Earth who can sell a rectangular touch screen device with icons arranged in a grid! This has resulted in countersuits by HTC, Samsung, Motorola and others that are based on actual PATENTS that are held, instead of just lawsuits based on nebulous design claims. The battles with Samsung, in particular, are interesting, because Samsung is a MAJOR supplier of parts for Apple. I know it would hurt Samsung to quit supplying Apple...but I wonder how much pain Apple would feel if they suddenly could not get parts for the iPhone 5 right before launch!

Since Steve Jobs is now gone, so is his "patented" Reality Distortion Field. Tim Cook is not going to get away with telling his customers that they are "holding it wrong" the way Steve could! There is going to be a HUGE backlash against Apple for their anti-consumer behavior...it's coming, and in my opinion, its LONG overdue!

Geoffrey, I can't agree with this article more! I own an iPhone and iPad and I'm flamed for being a fanboy!! What's wrong with wanting a capable device with the best app support? And since I also own and recommend Plasma's it's like people feel the need to prove you wrong. Thanks for letting me know there's still a few intelligent people that choose products based on tangible performance and user-experience.

jnemesh- I agree that there model is overly restrictive, but some of their products are worth it. Cost should never be the sole factor in choosing a product. After all, it's not like we all drive Ford Fiesta's! Part of the success of the apple model is the fact that actually software cost money and forces us to pay for it. And a good developer; despite the App store premium, will actually benefit financially in developing a quality product.

True and true, very good article.

We learn so much more when we read other peoples point of view, its just no fun when they become personal attacks.

We just have to make sure we do not label people as haters if they just happen to disagree with our point of view.
