From working with loudspeakers for years, the emphasis was on building a system that had coherency and a smooth, wide-band, frequency response. The V-Moda approach is to give as much bass as tolerable for some music formats while overdoing it for others. I would like to see what the actual response of these phones looked like on KEMAR or a Head-Acoustics mannequin (or for that matter in a real ear with probe microphone). I think we might be surprised. As to the R for Right and Red as well, for years in audio the format has been one of the following: Red for Right and Blue for Left (Audiology), Red for Right and White for Left (some audio), and Black for Right and Grey for Left (old audio). It never hurts to be redundant.

If you get a set of phone with built-in line microphones for iPhone use, remember, that the microphone side goes with the left ear even when you can't right a marking and there is not color coding to help you along.

My M80 is not bass-heavy in the least. Compared to a Philips L1 which has significant bass emphasis, the M80 sounds neutral. Compared to the Shure 1840 which is slightly shy of neutral, the M80 sounds neutral. Compared to the Grado PS-500 which has a ~5 db bass hump around 100 hz, the M80 sounds neutral. With the iPod I use treble booster, and that gives a better balance. And in spite of the treble boost, no harshness, brightness, shrillness, sibilance or other problems.
