The end of the first week of January is upon us, and it's high time to make good on those promises you made to yourself. But first things first — you can let that exercise program slide for a few more weeks, but you need to learn how to shred. Just picked up the guitar for the first time? Or are you finally carving out a few extra minutes this year to sharpen your chops? Raw Talent Guitar's instructional software (which we looked at earlier this week) may well be ablet to help you out, whatever your particular guitaristic situation. And even better, the company's given us a copy of the software/hardware package to give away to one lucky reader.
As with our previous giveaways, all we ask from you in order for you to qualify is a little input. Let us know if you'd like to see more musical instrument industry coverage from us, and what kind. Tools like RTG aimed at those learning an instrument? Instrument reviews? Apps? Hardware and software synthesizers? DAW packages? Microphones and recording devices? More interviews focusing on instrumentalists? There's a whole world out there that we could pay at least occasional attention to, but should we? And how much attention?
Please share your thoughts, and you could soon be playing along to Padraig O'Kane's lessons, under the watchful eye of RTG's evaluator.
The winner will be chosen randomly from among those who leave on-topic comments below (you'll have to register — no anonymous commenters, we need a valid e-mail contact address to inform you of your win), so don't be afraid to speak your mind. We'll take entries until midnight (Eastern Time), on January 13th, and notify the winner via e-mail on Monday, January 16th. Good luck!

Musical Instrument coverage? Oh, Yeah!!!!!!!! I think you will find that a lot of us are interested in coverage on instruments - learning software, apps, reviews of both new and used instruments: I would think would be well received - and I'm sure there are a good number of folks interested in recording
I don't think this would be a wrong move for you (or us)

I think there is a lot of room for content like this, for the Rockband fans to switch into playing a real instrument. Musical instrument content like iphone apps, home recording, education and the like would be quite useful. I don't think reviewing run of the mill guitars and drumsets is necessary, there are lots of other sources for that kind of information.

Expanding one's knowledge is never a bad thing. People are drawn to publications like this because they have a passion for 'audio-video'. Find interesting and informative topics to feature and i can't see how introducing more of these types of articles wouldn't be successful and enjoyed.
ps: i've had a left handed acoustic guitar hangin' in my music room for 13 years, i think it's time i learned how to do something more than impersonate Hendrix on it!
thanx for your consideration.

Although there are specific publications that deal with music and gear for making music there is no focus I've found on the integration with a/v in the consumer realm such as the teaching/learning tools like Raw Talent Guitar, the interactive realm. There's also a need I believe for gear reviews, how-tos, etc., that combine home/home studio a/v equipment with music creation products (hardware and software) for even greater flexibility within the home. To use the existing home theater or a/v equipment for more than a consumption of video and sound has great potential. That's part of why the Wii and xBox exist. I think if you kept the focus on expanding the usefulness of all things consumer a/v focused through interactive products you will find an interested segment of the population that currently skips past Sound+Vision as just home theater only once they've set up theirs. I really like the magazine for that purpose, but will readership grow by some outside-the-box (home theater) content that still ties to it... my bet is yes.
I would love to see coverage of the software, apps, accessories, etc, but the instruments are covered pretty well everywhere else. If you could include, as suggested by others, ways to incorporate musical instruments into my A/V setup, that would be awesome though! In other words, I like the idea and am excited by the new focus S&V would give to musical gear. Thanks for asking!
As an audiophile wannabe and sometimes musician and audio engineer I always enjoy music related articles. Keep it in the consumer realm most of the time. Things people would do at home. DOn't try to be a pro audio site as that is already available. Instead take an audiophile approach; sound quality, easy of use, consumer value, vs pro, consumer friendly controls, and learning curves.
We don;t need coverage on $5000.00 guitars and amps, rather the basics like thew best programs for beginners and intermediate players, the best software, personal monitoring and even some mixers and recorders that would appeal to the consumer/hobbyist not the working pro.
I think that musical industry coverage would be great to see in S&V.
A series of articles that review systems for learning to play an instrument would be interesting, as would articles that document how different people learned to play. I'm one of those people who would like to learn to play an instrument and this just might be the catalyst to do it.
I'm of mixed mind here, but I tip more to the 'there's plenty of instrument gear press already' side.
I admit, I just purchased a guitar in an effort to learn to play. I have seen some software and apps, but no professional reviews to help make decisions. I have also had to self teach myself about music equipment. It would be nice to have professional, unbiased reviews of equipment. I'm not sure how you make that leap. There is a lot of equipment out there, but I would love to have a dependable resource like S&V provide advice.
I'm a gear person, so I prefer the majority of articles to be on a/v equipment and how to use it; what's good, not so good, a steal for the price, etc. I do occasionally go outside of my normal likes and read feature stories on major people in different fields (especially music), and what they are doing that is new and interesting. But, I tend to skim the music articles if they get too lengthy and have little technical info; or, conversely, if the article is very, very technical in an area that doesn't interest me. I always like new-product blurbs on almost anything, though.
I would like S&V to stick to its current format .
Yeah, I would definitely like to see some coverage of musical instruments, recording technology, etc. Particularly the integration, connectivity with AV / Home entertainment / gaming systems. As the lines blur between these previously separate "platforms", it makes good sense to cover it from all angles.
At the same time, please don't lose site of your new music reviews
something like you use already will suffice, the music industry has plenty of ways to promote their industryb but i would like to see more how-to storys and comments
Thanks but no thanks would be my advice. Plenty of content already available through print and multi-media.
Sounds like a great start. I hope they have a version two that fixes my biggest concern also contained in RockBand Pro and RockSmith. I need to be able to play the song incredibly slowly while I am learning.
I would like to see maybe a small section on music instruments and equipment. Obviously there are magazines out there that cover this but a quick product review maybe on sound reproduction (such as amps and electronics) seems appropriate and interesting to me.
I think it would be great to have more info on this, seems like there are more and more products out there that are coming out but not at break neck speed. I would think to possibly do a monthly thing about instead though. I was looking at this RTG product for several weeks and debating on if I should pick it up or not. I play a little but I sure need help and not knowing if it is a good product with the high pricetag that it comes kind of makes me think about purchasing it but I am on the fence still. S&V has provided a lot of info in the past that was very useful to me and this is actually the first time I am posting (pushed to post since possible give away of RTG) I think this would be a nice to have section, it may grow as this section might get bigger. BTW love the CES coverage.
I'd love to see more reviews on apps (given the explosion in the amount of different apps available), as well as equipment reviews. My son is building his own recording studio literally a piece at a time so getting reviews on different mixers, mics, etc. would be helpful for me in helping him with this project.
Like so many have commented, there are plenty of magazines directed at istrument reviews, so unless S&V can bring a fresh approach to that subject matter I would say stay away. I would be interested in in other hardware and software reviews, especially if also talk of integration into a stereo or home theater set-up. Obviously, there are few products today that meet the latter criteria, but even the homem recording angle keeps the content more on point while broadening the scope of your coverage. Even if you don't have something in every issue, it isworth exploring.
