Hi Brent - thanks for your review of the ZVOX 580. I've had mine for 2 weeks now, and would like to share my thoughts. I have it connected using two inputs; The analog in-1 is fed by my DirecTV HR24 DVR, and the optical digital input is connected to my Panasonic TC-P46S30 TV. I use the analog connection to allow insertion of a pair of inline audio pads (-12db each), so I can get the volume steps on the ZVOX volume control less coarse.
First, I'm skeptical about digital amplifiers (IMO, very few of them sound good), but I realize that they kind of go along with digital inputs, which the ZVOX sorely needed. Makes me wonder if I'd have been happier with the now discontinued 575 HSD model.
Second, I'm also against so-called full-range drivers (remember the Bose 901?), or small midrange drivers trying to also be tweeters. At close range, the 3.5-inch speakers sound harsh, especially up in the high freq's.
Lastly, You're right about your assessment of the "Dialog Emphasis" feature (it's bad), but not the "Output Levelling" feature. For those of us who disdain loud commercials or movie action sequences at +30db, this item is essential. When I engage it, the volume fluctuations I observe are caused by the background music changing levels, another problem with the content (not the ZVOX).

I think in order for the manufacturers to make the Zvox TV sound system work with many remote controllers, they must have allowed it to undergo intensive usability testing. Though it might not achieve the same effect as many other high end home theatre systems out in the market, for that price, and quality, I think it is a pretty good deal! The most serious of audiophiles need not apply though.

This is Fred Pinkerton from ZVOX Audio.
The ZBASE 580 (and other current ZVOX systems) enters "Standby" after
about 9 minutes of audio silence. We have heard very little complaints about
this feature. If the speaker enters Standby, a press of the Mute, Volume Up
or Volume Down restores operation.

On the back of the "learn your remote" instruction sheet, there is a column
that describes how to disengage "Auto Standby". This converts any current
ZVOX Audio system into straight "manual" on/off mode.

It sounds like the ZVOX 580 does a lot of things well. Most, if not all of the review and comments seem to be related to TV, movies or games. How does it do with music? I would want to listen to CD's and internet music through it as well.

I think the Dialog Emphasis feature will be more appreciated for the not so young. Apparently this was lost on the reviewer.
