I would be curious to know if the RM 1.3 with the 2M Red would be the best setup of the two, since you are crediting the Ortofon for the"midrange and treble" magic but giving the bass nod to the 1.3. I realize that you would now be comparing a $599 setup but in the analog world, that's a small price to pay.

I don't know, man...can someone explain to me how one turntable can have better BASS than another independent of what cartridge is installed?
Also, really? -- it's bad for the stylus to spend time in an LP's runout groove (Q Up Tonearm Lifter -- page 11 of your latest print issue -- you describe it as "crashing into the label"). I owned an AR XA turntable for about 15 years and occasionally fell asleep while a record was playing -- my Shure M91E seemed none the worse for wear!

@dolsey01: That would be an interesting comparison, but the Debut Carbon has gone back to Sumiko. One thing for sure is that I do like the Debut Carbon's arm better. The RM-1.3's arm is kind of rinky-dink. I would really love to have a carbon-fiber arm on the RM-1.3.

@abr88: Bass is surprisingly variable from turntable to turntable. It's not subtle. You'd have to consult a turntable manufacturer to explain why, but I've noticed it seems to have a lot to do with mass and damping. The MDF platter on the RM-1.3 is heavier and much better damped than the platters on the Debut models, which are relatively thin metal and not very well damped. I also noticed this when I was up at Innovative Audio last year and we did a blind shootout of a pretty massive old Technics vs. a less massive old Yamaha and a much less massive, relatively modern turntable (Rega, I think).
