The Samsung HP-S5053 HDTV's color temperature measured close to the 6,500-K standard after picture adjustments were made to the Movie preset with its Warm 2 Color Tone mode selected, but grayscale tracking fluctuated noticeably between 30 and 80 IRE. Fine-tuning via its service menu resulted in a more accurate color rendition, with grayscale tracking measuring ±500 K from 30 to 80 IRE - below-average performance. The Samsung's various inputs revealed different amounts of color decoder error, with a +10% green push measured on HDMI and +10% for the component-video connections. Overscan (the amount of picture area "hidden" behind the edges of the TV's screen) measured 5% for both the HDMI and component-video inputs - higher than normal. Test patterns in 720p format showed excellent picture resolution for all the Samsung's high-def inputs, although a slight degree of edge enhancement could also be seen with an HDMI connection. The component-video input, on the other hand, looked comparatively free of any edge enhancement.
Screen uniformity on the Samsung was good overall, although a degree of color tint could be seen on full-field gray test patterns and on images with large white segments. Screen glare from the TV's protective screen shield was also an issue, with reflections appearing on the screen when it was hit with direct illumination from windows or lamps. Upconversion of standard 480i programs was relatively poor, with the various patterns on the Silicon Optix HQV test disc showing a soft picture with mediocre diagonal filtering.
