The JVC's color reproduction was most accurate in Theater mode with the Low color-temperature preset selected. Grayscale tracking was ±178 degrees kelvin of the 6,500-K standard from 30 to 100 IRE - very good performance. Adjustments made to the red, green, and blue color-temperature controls in the Theater menu helped compensate for a slight green deficiency, and they also improved grayscale tracking to ±148 degrees K. Color-decoder tests revealed a relatively high -20% green error on the HDMI inputs, and -5% red on the component-video inputs. Compared with the SMPTE HD specification, red, green, and blue color points showed fair to high levels of oversaturation, although adjustments made to the Color Management settings in the Theater Pro II menu helped make red tones look more balanced.
Overscan - the amount of picture area cut off at the edges of the TV's screen - measured 0% for 1080i-format high-definition signals when the Full Native mode was selected. The set displayed 1080i/p and 720p test patterns with full resolution on both the HDMI and component-video connections, although some noise was visible on the latter input. Screen uniformity was excellent when the set was viewed from off-center seats up to 45º - the best off-axis performance I've seen from a flat-panel LCD. Both black- and white-field uniformity were also excellent, with no sign of the tinting, streaking, or uneven screen brightness that's typically seen in LCD TVs.
In contrast to many other TVs we've tested recently, the JVC passed the full suite of tests contained on the Silicon Optix HQV high-def test disc, including the Film Detail test that has proved problematic to most other sets. Its upconversion of standard DVDs was also very good, although it did fail the Film Detail test on the HQV test DVD. No "jaggy" artifacts showed up on any of the DVD movie scenes I watched on the set, however. With the exception of Theater mode, a small amount of edge enhancement was visible in all of the picture presets and could not be eliminated by using the Sharpness control.
Both of the set's Digital Video Noise Reduction settings blurred detail to some degree on standard-def images, although the Minimum mode helped smooth out grainy high-def images without reducing picture detail. The set's MPEG NR adjustment had little if any effect on noisy images.
