That's right, the women are smarter! At least the three women of Sleater-Kinney and the star of Amélie are, because they've taken the No. 1 spots in our annual S&V Entertainment Awards. Of course, from Gabriel to the Boss, the boys who made our list of the best CDs of 2002 aren't softies. The same is true for the lads, from Fellini to Lynch, included among the best DVDs released in 2002, honored for both the original film (whatever the year) and its presentation on disc. If you're smart, you'll go to page 18 of the February S&V to learn how you can win every CD and DVD you see here. (And except for Mulholland Dr. and Brotherhood of the Wolf, every DVD is a multidisc set.) It's easy! We won't even ask you to count how many times "singin' in the rain" is heard in Singin' in the Rain or the letter V appears in the phrase "the Vines' Highly Evolved and the Hives' Veni Vidi Vicious." After all, when we count our Top 10s at S&V, we go to 11.
(Kill Rock Stars)
If their last one was London Calling, this is The Clash. Rock is saved, again.
2. Peter Gabriel
Ten years after growing Us, he returns to the danger of his youth.
3. Bryan Ferry
We haven't heard music this Roxy since Siren. Most unexpected comeback of the year.
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Such a Tweedy place, with plenty of room in its moody corridors.
5. The Soft Boys
A Hitchcock thriller. Robyn and his old New Wavers are back, with guitars and wits intact.
6. Steve Earle
Country, rocked. And the country, reckoned. As topical and timeless as ever.
7. Bruce Springsteen
That's Bruce and the E Street Band. And that's a revival meeting.
8. Norah Jones
Come Away with Me(Blue Note)
Jazz? Pop? It's music , pure and simple. No wonder so many have gone away with her.
9. Guided by Voices
Universal Truths and Cycles
Will they ever run out of songs? Discuss. Enjoy.
10. TIE: The Hives
Veni Vidi Vicious
The punks! Garage rock lives.
Liberty, whimsy, and originality make Amélie a joy, and the extras-laden DVD heightens the delight.
2. Moulin Rouge
(20th Century Fox)
Puts the theatrical back in home theater with a performance that leaves you thrilled.
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The four-disc extended edition delivers on all promises.
4. TIE: Unforgiven; Mulholland Dr.
Thought-provoking "Westerns" on DVDs that stimulate the senses.
5. Children of Paradise
The all-time favorite French classic gets the treatment it deserves.
The new edition's extras are as intriguingly puzzling as the movie, but image and sound are crystal clear.
7. Monsters, Inc.(Disney/Pixar)
An acutely cute, funny creation that hops and pops. Bonuses will illuminate and educate.
8. Brotherhood of the Wolf
Simply the best kung-fu werewolf French-costume-drama action film ever, on a kick-derrière disc.
9. Singin' in the Rain
Far surpassing the fine first release, this Rain has an astonishingly rich picture and fan-pleasing extras.
10. 8 1/2
A perfect presentation of Fellini's gorgeous and startling images, in a set that is truly revealing.
