A few weeks ago, we reported that Philips is working on a 3D prototype. Now, that speculation has become a reality. Debuting at InfoComm 2008, a new 52-inch LCD display gives a 3D 'look-around' effect, no funky 3D glasses required.
The 3D Display is a full HD monitor with the full brightness, contrast (2,000:1) and 8ms response time you expect from Philips. However, this one uses WOWvx technology with the 2D-plus-Depth format. This tricks the eye into thinking the image is three-dimensional.
According to Jos Swillens, Philips 3D Solutions CEO, "With
our new 52-inch 3D display in the portfolio, we can offer the
pro-AV and digital signage market an
even higher degree of immersion
and a more exciting 3D viewing experience." Wow, Philips has a whole department devoted to 3D? Who knew!
The 3D Display should begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2008, but pricing is still under wraps.
While these monitors are
designed for professional applications, we know you can't wait to
check it out at home too.—Leslie Shapiro
