MUSIC REVIEW: Grandaddy

Just Like the Fambly Cat

Modesto, California's Grandaddy grew up in public, transforming from a lo-fi consortium into a lush pop group - and they've decided to call it quits with an album that encapsulates everything they've done right and wrong over the past decade. It's a combination of cheesy keyboard buzzes, atmospheric studio winds, vague orchestration, the occasional monster guitar chord, and Jason Lytle's winsome, sometimes cloying vocals. Songs emit primarily from an ethereal netherworld where, even as frustration mounts ("Elevate Myself"), it's with a dash of New Wave verve and spark. Just Like the Fambly Cat - playful indeed.
