TEST BENCH

DOLBY DIGITAL PERFORMANCE
All data were obtained from test DVDs using 16-bit test signals containing dither, which sets limits on measured distortion and noise performance. Reference input level is -20 dBFS, and reference output is 1 watt into 8 ohms. Volume setting for reference level was 48. All level trims at 0 except for subwoofer-related tests, all speakers set to "large," subwoofer on. All are worst-case figures where applicable.

Output at clipping (1 kHz into 8/4 ohms)
1 channel driven: 104/173 W (20.2/22.4 dBW)
5 channels driven (8/4 ohms): 73/83 W (18.6/19.2 dBW)
Distortion at 1 watt (THD+N, 1 kHz)
8/4 ohms: 0.08/0.06 %
Noise level (A-wtd): -72.2 dB
Excess noise (with sine tone)
16-bit (EN16): +5.4 dB
Frequency response: 20 Hz to 20 kHz +0.2, -0.5 dB

MULTICHANNEL PERFORMANCE, ANALOG INPUT
Reference input is 200 mV and output level is 1 watt into 8 ohms; volume setting for reference output level was 33.
Distortion (THD+N, 1 kHz, 8/4 ohms): 0.1/0.1%
Noise level (A-wtd): -74.1 dB
Frequency response: <10 Hz to 23.5 kHz +0.3, -3.2 dB

STEREO PERFORMANCE, DIGITAL INPUT
All signals were PCM and 16-bit except where noted otherwise. Reference level is -20 dBFS; all level trims at 0. Volume setting for reference level was 31.
Output at clipping (1 kHz, 8/4 ohms) both channels driven: 97/154 W (19.9/21.9 dBW)
Distortion at reference level: 0.08%
Noise level (A-wtd): -70.4 dB
Excess noise (with/without sine tone) 16-bit (EN16): +3.9/+3.9 dB quasi-20-bit (EN20): +21.7/+21.2 dB
Noise modulation: 1.2 dB
Frequency response: 20 Hz to 20 kHz +0.4, -0.5 dB

BASS-MANAGEMENT PERFORMANCE
Measured results obtained with Dolby Digital test signals.
Subwoofer-output frequency response (crossover set to 80 Hz): 24 dB/octave above -6-dB rolloff point of 78 Hz
High-pass-filter frequency response (crossover set to 80 Hz): 12 dB/octave below -3-dB rolloff point of 80 Hz
Unclipped subwoofer output (trim at 0, -20 dBFS signal): 3.1 volts
Subwoofer distortion (from 6-channel, 50-Hz, 0-dBFS signal; subwoofer trim set to 0): 0.8%
Crossover consistency: bass crossover frequency same for all signal formats that receive bass management
Signal-format consistency: no bass management for the multichannel analog input or DVD-Audio over HDMI
Speaker size selection: small or large for all speakers except subwoofer, but restrictions apply; setting front speakers to small locks all speakers to small; setting L/R surrounds to small locks back surrounds to small; setting subwoofer to "no" locks front speakers to large
Speaker-distance compensation: available for all seven main channels

The power output of the JVC RX-D702B was impressive, with 104 watts into 8 ohms and 173 watts into 4 ohms, one channel driven. Power output for five channels driven was 73 watts into 8 ohms and 83 into 4 ohms, also very good performance. The measured A-weighted noise levels and excess-noise levels were relatively high, but there were no audible problems in normal listening.
