While movie pundits squabble over whether or not 3D does anything besides eke out a few extra bucks per ticket at the box office, gamers have been reaping stereoscopic rewards for the past couple of months. Sony 3D games started making their way to market this past fall, and there have already been enough high-profile releases to keep those expensive glasses stuck on your face for the rest of the year. Sony might still be sorting out the PlayStation Network's ongoing problems, but unlike Microsoft (who early on adopted a wait-and-see attitude towards 3D development for the Xbox platform), the company’s stance is clear: 3D is their (and our) future, whether we like it or not.
I took an extended look at three (the number is pure coincidence, I swear) of the most recent stereoscopic games — Mortal Kombat, Crysis 2, and MotorStorm Apocalypse — across three very different genres. While in no case did I feel that 3D was simply window dressing, the game that benefited most from the added depth caught me off guard.
