DVD REVIEW: Thank You For Smoking

In this sophisticated and effective satire, Aaron Eckhart is nearly perfect as a smarmy tobacco-industry lobbyist who has long since lost his moral compass. Eckhart leads a stellar cast that includes Maria Bello, Adam Brody, Sam Elliott, Katie Holmes, Rob Lowe, William H. Macy, and Robert Duvall. For a narrative-driven film, this DVD looks excellent. It has nicely saturated, non-smearing colors and a couple of scenes with well-above-average shadow detail. The sound is great, too. Although surround-channel effects are rare, Rolfe Kent's jazz score is full and lush. There are two commentaries - one by writer/director Jason Reitman alone, and another where he's joined by Eckhart and actor David Koechner - and both are reasonably entertaining. [R] English, Dolby Digital 5.1; Spanish, Dolby Surround; letterboxed (2.35:1) and anamorphic wide-screen; dual layer.
