Director Patrice Leconte's fine adaptation of a Georges Simenon novel takes us deep into the world of the titular misanthropic tailor (Michel Blanc, superb as usual) and his obsession for the comely neighbor (Sandrine Bonnaire) he spies on through his window. The transfer makes the most of Leconte's detailed mise en scène, with rich colors frequently offsetting Hire, in his black suit and white tie, as a seemingly monochromatic character. The mono sound sometimes bumps up the music a little too much but is basically fine. Extras include a 1991 interview with Leconte (which might have been fine had it lasted longer than 2 minutes) and a stills gallery.
