DVD REVIEW: Aeon Flux

Another dystopian vision of the future, another ass-kicking chick in leather. Based on an MTV cartoon series, this film is better than you might expect, but the picture and sound are the stars on DVD. Whether it's the bustling city or the deadly garden surrounding a government building, details are rich and colors practically jump off the screen.

The 5.1-channel mix may not earn points for subtlety, but it does create a constantly thrilling soundstage, with things flying by in every direction. The five featurettes are pedestrian, as is the commentary by star Charlize Theron and producer Gale Anne Hurd. Skip to the second one by co-screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi for a fascinating discussion on the compromises they had to make with studio executives. [PG-13] English, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Surround; letterboxed (2.35:1) and anamorphic widescreen; dual layer.
