CD Review: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

This Is Somewhere
Hollywood
Music •••½
Sound •••½

Compared with 2005's bluesier Nothing but the Water, this set has a more radio-friendly pop polish, and some of the tunes ("Stop the Bus," "Mr. Columbus") play to arena rafters. But the occasional overproduction can't hide Potter's songwriting talent on clever tracks like the cautionary "Ah Mary," the toe-tapping "Ain't No Time," and the exquisitely poignant "Falling or Flying." The album barely captures the Nocturnals' more-than-capable chops, but it's really all about Potter's heartfelt singing and her obvious love of rock & roll, both of which shine through everywhere on This Is Somewhere.
