I loved The Blue Room and Parachutes. There seemed something bubbling under about Chris Martin's words, and I loved how their music could create a mood simultaneously desultory and uplifting. And I can say without shame, I fell asleep to Parachutes for years.

But my enthusiasm for each subsequent album has been dimmer and dimmer, until it finally reached the point of revulsion, and now, oddly, I don't even feel revulsion anymore- only complete apathy. I previewed some tracks from this album and I found myself registering no feelings about it whatsoever. Zero. here is a band that used to be sorta indie while also being purely pop, and it was likeable, but it has magically dissolved gradually into the blando pop firmament, made of the same pavement as formed by Josh Groban. Pure, insipid, adult contempo.

Coldplay has been scientifically proven to put people in a better mood. While some indie/pop bands might require headphones, you can listen to Coldplay with anyone: Your kids, grandpa, even Pastor Tim. I will keep buying their music until they come out with boxed sets, which I will download for free.
