There is, however, some effort involved in watching Treme. The language, the accents, the kaleidoscopic customs and culture: All of it adds up to something that the uninitiated often must work at to understand. Even those of us lucky enough to live in New Orleans have to watch each episode of Treme two or three times to catch all the details that make the show so worthwhile, and so true to daily life.
It’s no coincidence that Simon’s shows always find their true audiences on disc, where subtitles (and a variety of extras) allow interested parties some welcome opportunities for relatively easy entry points. Good thing, too. The dense police jargon of The Wire scared off a lot of viewers, but that’s nothing compared with the traumatized and alien American landscape found in Treme’s post-flood New Orleans.
